“Collateral damage” is intriguing. The person who died was apparently famous, so did the “we” suffer because of it?

My father has never gotten the loving admiration and fame for his musical talent that he’s always desired – and his happiness is the collateral damage. I do t think he’ll ever understand.

The date is probably May 5, 2020 but if the author is being overly cautious in trying to keep the identity of “he” a secret the death date could also be October 5, 2029.

I think this is written by the famous writer's partner about the child they had together. The child died, but that the famous writer doesn't know about the child's passing because he is not involved in their lives…
